MIDDLE EAST: An Arab tribute to the King of Pop

Middle East analyst and blogger Juan Cole of Informed Comment writes today about Michael Jackson’s popularity in the Arab world. Jackson lived in Bahrain for a time after he was acquitted on child molestation charges in 2005. But he had a falling out with his benefactor, a son of the Persian Gulf island's emir.
Cole includes a link to a Middle Eastern video tribute to the King of Pop posted on YouTube. Although the comments suggest that a Jackson soundtrack may have been superimposed over a clip of men in traditional Arab robes dancing to music from the Gulf, Cole says “it is the height of hybridity either way.”
"Given the stereotyping of Gulf Arabs as medieval and fanatical, and given the hurtful prejudice against their very form of clothing in the West, it is only right that they should have the last word here on Michael Jackson's universal appeal."

At a meeting in a bungalow at the Neverland ranch, Jackson said
he had his mother at his side when he fought off another
proposal.
"And I vehemently told them, 'No, I am not signing this,'"
Jackson recalled. "And I just remember how angry, the intensity
of the anger in the room. And so they marched out."
Jackson made his comments when he was grilled by lawyers for
the Hackensack, N.J., finance company that is suing the singer
in Manhattan Federal Court. The firm, Prescient Acquisition, is
owned by businessman Darien Dash, who claims Jackson stiffed
his company out of $48 million.
According to Dash's lawyer Steven Altman, Dash was due the
money for helping Jackson refinance a $272 million bank loan
and secure $573 million in financing to buy out Sony's half of
the Beatles' song catalogue that Jackson co-owned.
But Jackson claimed he's never heard of Dash, a cousin of
hip-hop impresario Damon Dash, and doesn't remember signing any
agreement.

Burkle was calling him on the cell phone during bathroom
breaks, warning him not to sign anything, Michael Jackson said.
Stabler wasn't happy, Jackson said.
"[Stabler] said, 'What's the problem? You're not down, you're
with the Jews now. You're not down with blacks anymore,'"
Jackson testified.
"It was unkind," Jackson added. "It was mean. It was
meanspirited. It was nasty. Simply because he couldn't get me
to sign something that he wanted me to sign."
The next time Jackson saw Stabler "he wanted to take my head
off." And his brother Randy wasn't too happy, either.
Randy later claimed that Jackson and his staff had run up a
$700,000 bill on his American Express card during the trial,
which Jackson said he would repay.

A Santa Maria, Calif., jury acquitted him of child molestation
charges in June 2005, after which he retreated into the
seclusion of his Neverland ranch.
But during breaks in the trial, Jackson says he was being
pressured to sign off on a multimillion-dollar financing deal
by Don Stabler, an associate brought in by brother Randy, his
go-to guy on financial matters during much of his career.
Jackson initially took a liking to Stabler after Randy
introduced them.
"He reminded me of people that live in mid-America like
Indiana," Jackson testified.
Stabler was persistent, at one point during the trial sending a
message through one of Jackson's Nation of Islam security
guards that questioned the singer's faithfulness to his
African-American heritage.
It was a sore point for someone who has denied he purposely
lightened his skin.
By then, Jackson had turned to Burkle, the billionaire pal of
former President Bill Clinton, for financial help. Burkle
brought in Jesse Jackson, who's known Michael Jackson since his
Jackson 5 days, to help with the consultation.

The Gloved One even fingered a man close to his older brother
Randy as a key villain.
It was an ordeal that left Jackson bitter about the industry in
which he's spent his entire life.
"It's full of sharks, charlatans and imposters," he said in
testimony taken last summer in Paris.
"Because there's a lot of money involved, there's a bunch of
schmucks in there," Jackson said. "It's the entertainment
world, full of thieves and crooks. That's not new. Everybody
knows that."

Michael Jackson claims he was nearly swindled out of his
fortune during his kiddie-sex trial and only the wise counsel
of the Rev. Jesse Jackson and billionaire Ron Burkle saved him.
The behind-the-scenes battle over the pop star's finances is
detailed in a sworn deposition he gave for a federal lawsuit
scheduled to go to trial this week.
There is a possibility that Jackson himself might even be
called to testify.

A New Look

Michael's mum Katherine to get $1 million a year from late singer's estateCourt documents released in LA have shown that Katherine Jackson – mother of late superstar Michael – will get more than $1 million (£606,000) a year from the king of pop's estate.
The sum is made up of $26,804 a month for Katherine and a monthly allowance of $60,000 for Michael's children, Prince Michael, 11, nine-year-old Paris, and Blanket, seven.
Details of the allowance, which was approved in August, have remained confidential until now.
Court papers show Katherine's money goes on an assistant, housekeeper, driver, utilities, clothing, grooming and other expenses. It is not known if any of her funds are being used to help other members of the Jackson family.
As far as how the children's allowance is being spent, the court documents state $315,000 per year goes towards employees caring for them while $160,000 is put aside for entertainment and other expenses.
Michael's mum, who is the children's legal guardian, wanted details of the money kept private but the judge presiding over a hearing this week said he did not think the total amount could remain sealed.
A further court hearing has been scheduled for October for a progress report on how the children are coping since their father's death.
Concerns were raised after Michael's daughter Paris paid an emotional tribute to her father at his memorial service in July.

We will not comment

According to information from the LA coroner's office, which was made public in Texas, where Dr Murray has offices, Michael had lethal levels of the powerful anaesthetic propofol in his body when he died.
The findings came to light this week as unconfirmed police reports suggesting investigators had concluded the star's death was homicide.
Under Californian law this means the artist was killed either accidentally or on purpose.
On this aspect of the case, Mr Chernoff said: "We will not comment on the anonymous law enforcement source that claims that Michael Jackson's death will be ruled a homicide.

He was the ultimate performer – an exceptional dancer, a gifted song writer and singer with a burning passion for everything he did. His work continued to inspire new generations of fans around the world, and will no doubt keep his name alive for decades to come. Few musicians can equal the incredible impact Michael Jackson has had on the world of music since he burst onto the scene as a member of the Jackson Five in 1966. As the world mourns the loss of the king of pop, we look back at key moments from a stellar career. Brooke Shields remembers Michael Jackson at his memorial serviceWhenever we were out together and a picture was taken there would be a caption of some kind, and the caption usually said something like, ‘an odd couple’ or ‘an unlikely pair.’ But but to us it was the most natural and easiest of friendships.
“I was 13 when we met and from that day on our friendship grew. Michael always knew he could count on me to support him or be his date, and that we would have fun no matter where we were. We had a bond.”

I have decided to pause and be silent. This feels right for me. Michael was a personal love of mine, a treasured part of my world, part of the fabric of my life in a way that I can’t seem to find words to express.
Michael wanted me to be there for his children, and I will be there if they ever they need me. I hope, today brings closure for all those who loved him. Thank you Katherine and Joe for sharing your son with the world and with me. I send my love and condolences to the Jackson family.”

“Michael always knew he could count on me to support him or be his date. … We had a bond and maybe it was because we both understood what it was like to be in the spotlight from a very, very young age. I used to tease him and say, `I started when I was 11 months old. You’re a slacker. You were like 5?’ Both of us needed to be adults very early, but when we were together, we were two little kids having fun. … M.J.’s laugh was the sweetest and purest of anyone I’ve known.”

Autopsy Report Reveal Jackson Was 'Healthy'

Michael Jackson was "fairly healthy" and did not suffer from any serious pre-existing conditions that would have increased his risk of a drug overdose, according to new autopsy report findings.
The King of Pop passed away on June 25 after suffering a cardiac arrest. The Los Angeles County Coroner ruled in August the star was killed by a cocktail of strong prescription drugs.
Investigators claim Jackson died when an injection of powerful anesthetic Propofol was mixed with another sedative.
Jackson's personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, is currently being investigated by police over allegations he administered the fatal dose to help the star sleep the night before he died.

M J's Last Days Depicted In Rolling Stone

Following up on their Michael Jackson tribute issue, Rolling Stone has put the pop star on the cover for the second consecutive issue. The cover story, called "Michael Jackson's Final Days," delves deep into the events that led up to Jackson's death on June 25, including preparations for his This Is It concerts in London and his attempts to reorganize his life into something a little more inconspicuous. The piece visits Jackson's rehearsal spaces (there were a total of three) and quotes the people who surrounded the singer at the end of his life, including session musicians, security guards and promoters. "They seemed like they'd be the people who would have the least amount of spin," writer Claire Hoffman says in a video on the magazine's Web site. "Everybody was saying that he was really, really into this. He was so pumped about doing this tour. He wanted it to be the greatest show on Earth."

Michael Jackson's Kids Could Be Performers

Joe Jackson famously launched his sons, the Jackson 5, into superstardom, laying the groundwork for Michael Jackson's legendary career. And, in a "Good Morning America" interview on Friday (July 10), the family patriarch seemed to think Michael's children have bright futures in entertainment"I don't know — I keep watching Paris," he said, referring to Jackson's middle child, who spoke memorably at her father's memorial on Tuesday. "She ... wants to do something. And as far as I can see, well, they say Blanket [Michael's youngest child, Prince Michael II], he can really dance."

In the interview, when asked who should get custody of Blanket, Paris and Prince, he said he felt they should stay with the Jacksons, and specifically with Joe and his reportedly estranged wife, Katherine. "Their grandmother — Katherine — and I" should raise them, he said. "Yes, there's no one else to do what we can do for them. We should keep them all together and then make them happy, feed 'em like they're supposed to be fed, and let them get rest, plenty of sleep and grow up to be strong Jacksons."

Michael Jackson (1958-2009)

Pop star Michael Jackson has died. Jackson, 50, was rushed to a hospital in Los Angeles Thursday afternoon and was reportedly not breathing. The Jackson Five's sales declined after 1972, and the group suffered under Motown's strict refusal to allow the Jacksons creative control or input. The left Motown in 1975. In 1976, the group signed a new contract with CBS Records (first joining the Philadelphia International division and later moving over to Epic Records).
